Mick Gordon says he’d return to Doom “in a heartbeat” under the right conditions. Here’s what the composer said about his future with the iconic series.
Mick Gordon is open to returning to Doom.
The legendary Aussie composer behind Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal told IGN he’d come back to the series “in a heartbeat” โ if the circumstances were right.
Gordon said he’d return to Doom if “a lot of dominoes fall in a very specific way.”
“There are a lot of dominoes that would have to fall in a very specific way for that to occur,” he said at PAX Australia 2026. “If those dominoes ever fell in that way, I would. Of course. Within a heartbeat.”
He didn’t specify what those dominoes are. But the history between Gordon and id Software is complicated.
Gordon had a public falling-out with id Software after Doom Eternal’s release.
In a 2022 Medium post, Gordon accused id Software of failing to pay him for half his work on the Doom Eternal soundtrack. He singled out executive producer Marty Stratton as a “recurringly abusive presence.”
Despite that, Gordon’s love for Doom itself hasn’t faded.
“I had a whole list of ideas where I wanted to go with Doom,” he said. “And I’d love to explore that one day, for sure.”
Gordon has multiple projects in the pipeline.
| Project | Release Date |
|---|---|
| Warhammer 40,000: Boltgun 2 | October 14, 2026 |
| Defect | TBA |
| RADAR Festival 2027 | 2027 |
He contributed the final boss theme to Boltgun 2. He’s producing the full soundtrack for Defect, a cyberpunk squad-shooter from Doom and Call of Duty veterans.
In 2027, he’ll perform Doom and Doom Eternal music live with a full band for the first time at the UK’s RADAR festival.
id Software was hit hard by Microsoft’s Xbox layoffs in July 2026.
136 staff members were affected. Lead services programmer Chris Hays said: “It’s hard to make a game that is AAA, like we’ve done before, with half the people. And by hard, I mean impossible.”
The future of Doom โ with or without Gordon โ remains uncertain.
Mick Gordon’s door to Doom is open. The question is whether id Software will walk through it.
The composer has ideas. He has passion. He has the talent that made Doom’s soundtrack iconic. But the relationship needs repairing first.
For now, fans can hear his work in Boltgun 2 and Defect. And in 2027, they can see him perform Doom live.
